Rostam Aziz aikana Richmond
Tanzanians Reassured as Germany Recalls Eggs
By Alawi Masare, The Citizen Reporter
Dar es Salaam. The government has assured Tanzanian egg consumers of the safety of the products following news of an eggs recall in Germany because of contaminated chicken feed.
About 1,000 poultry farms in Germany have been closed after purchasing animal feed contaminated with dioxin, a chemical substance thought to cause cancer in humans.
Dioxin, a type of hydrocarbon and by-product of burning rubbish and industrial activities, can cause illness to human beings, including cancer and miscarriages. But the minister for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Dr David Mathayo, said yesterday that Tanzania was safe because it has long stopped importing eggs and chicken feed to avoid similar contamination and other chicken-related diseases.
“The news from Germany should not cause panic. I can confirm that we are safe and people can continue eating eggs and chicken,” he told The Citizen in a telephone interview yesterday.
Media reports have it that some potentially contaminated eggs had started being exported to neighbouring countries.
German government sources said some 136,000 eggs were exported to The Netherlands. The news was revealed after the European Commission asked for more information yesterday. However, Dr Mathayo, urged poultry farmers to feed their chicken with approved chicken-feed in order to ensure that the final products, both chicken and eggs, are safe .
There have been reports that some poultry and pig farmers in Tanzania use unauthorised chemicals for chicken to add egg productivity and rapid growth for fast profits.
Reports have cited ARV drugs being used in animal feed, especially by chicken and pig producers.
But the minister warned those who do not care about the health of consumers by feeding toxic feeds that may result into several diseases, cancer among them.
“Those who raise their chicken with unapproved feeds and drugs are risking consumers’ health and once discovered, appropriate measures will be taken against them,” he added.

Pretty Poet At No 10
As an intern on OBVs MP Shadowing Scheme, on Wednesday I visited No. 10 Downing Street, home of Prime Minister David Cameron. Was it how I imagined? To be honest, I have never imagined much further than the big black door with the No.10 on it. My mind has the habit of running away with itself and I usually have to reign it in but for this, I was quite comfortable not knowing what to expect.
Inside it was very grand, decor just as Margaret Thatcher had left it, gold, chandeliers, silverware and oil paintings, carpets so soft your heels just sink in. The building itself is made up of 3 houses joined together. Inside the rooms open up into each other, making large rooms larger and, we were told, echoing the desire of this government to "be the most open and transparent" in the world.
As I continue on my journey, seeking to learn if I have or even want a place in the world of politics, I think the picture that will remain with me from this visit, is still the big black door... because to me what it represents allows my imagination to go beyond all that I saw as I walked around the Prime Minister's office and residence. It allows me to envision how things could be in the future. The walls that would whisper remained silent still, and we could only hear muffled voices, conversations concealed... but that door speaks so loud. ia imprints such powerful images in our minds, with so many pivotal moments captureMedia imprints such powerful images in our minds, with so many pivotal moments captured on that famous doorstep, and so many more such moments to come.d on that famous doorstep, and so many more such moments to come.
